Mount Ararat: The Sacred Symbol of Armenia

Mount Ararat, visible from the Armenian capital Yerevan, has been the national symbol of Armenia for millennia, featuring prominently in Armenian identity and biblical tradition.

Mount Ararat (Masis in Armenian) stands as the most powerful symbol of Armenian national identity. This dormant volcanic mountain, with its twin peaks (Greater Ararat at 5,137m and Lesser Ararat at 3,896m), has been central to Armenian culture since ancient times. In biblical tradition, Mount Ararat is where Noah's Ark came to rest after the Great Flood. This connection has given the mountain profound religious significance for Armenians and Christians worldwide. For millennia, Mount Ararat stood at the heart of the Armenian homeland. Ancient Armenian kingdoms built their capitals in its shadow, and the mountain appears in countless Armenian legends, songs, and works of art. Today, although located in Turkey, Mount Ararat remains visible from much of Armenia, including the capital Yerevan. It appears on the Armenian coat of arms and continues to symbolize the enduring spirit and aspirations of the Armenian people.
